Battle of the Bars!

(update as of 03/2013 – all of the bars from the Round 2 article have now been added and will appear here as well due to the nature of the code that publishes this data as we create it)

Battle of the Bars

We’ve all eaten bars at some point whilst on the trail – and if you haven’t yet then it’s probably in your destiny to do so! Let’s face it; they’re a convenient way to stifle hunger pangs, and get a quick shot of energy, protein, and salts without having to consume live beetles. Hey, some of them even taste a little better than beetles. So, which bar is best you ask? “Define best”, we say! With this quasi-interactive post, you can do just that.

When it comes to taste, you’re on your own… but we’ve got your back if you want to know how much bang for the buck your bar has. We’ll take a look at a wide sampling of bars and see how they stack up in terms of calorie density, protein density, and carb density. For simplicity sake we picked one flavor of each bar and tried to included peanut butter since everyone loves it. If you are allergic to peanuts… bummer dood! We’re sorry :(

We even tossed Snickers and Payday into the mix to go head to head against the ‘nutritious’ bars.

Everything is sorted alphabetically. When reading the nutritional information a value of “0″ means either “zero”, less than 1%, or not specified by the manufacturer. Units are in grams or mg (whichever makes more sense) unless otherwise specified. All of the information is per serving. Cost are given in USD and are based on per-box pricing via the www… take em with a grain of salt, your local prices are probably different.

Hold onto your helmets; here we go!……..

Hike It. Like It.

Summary Graph

Have a gander at this graphy thingy to compare a few of the metrics that show whether your bar worth it’s weight, or not. The way we came up with the combined scores was to average out the totals of each of the categories listed, then normalize the results to a scale of 1-10 (10 being best). Weight was given to overall calorie count, but the calorie value was reduced as to not completely obscure the result. The exact formula used was: (calories/3 + fat_calories/3 + protein*2 + carbs – cost*10) (calories/3 + fat_calories/3 + protein*3 + carbs – cost*10), and then run through a normalizing formula. The results are telling, but how meaningful they are will depend on your nutritional priorities.
